Our Hosts and Instructors:

Craig Mayor

Craig Mayor started working with antiques already at age 16 when he apprenticed for a Pennsylvania antique dealer and restorer. After 5 years there he was ready to open his own restoration studio. In 1973 he established “MAYOR ANTIQUES” in a lovely historic building in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia.

Craig operated this landmark shop and an annex for almost 20 years when finally he said goodbye to Philadelphia and hello to new challenges in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He started a whole sale operation catering to upscale antique stores and galleries in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach rapidly establishing himself as a trusted and indispensable source of the best period antiques. In 1997 a new era began with the ‘Mayor Antiques’ shop on Floranada Avenue ” 45th street” in Fort Lauderdale in 2004 expanding into a new and much larger facility on Dixie Highway, which is today’s magnificent DECORATIVE ART & FINE ANTIQUES, INC.

Lars Hegelund

Lars Hegelund studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Copenhagen. After graduation he was awarded a grant from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs to teach at the Royal Academy and develop a new concept for ‘Arctic architecture and design’, on which subject he published a book. In 1972 he was awarded a grant to stay at the San Cataldo Monastery in Italy (a secluded workplace for Danish artists).

As an architect Lars Hegelund (at times in collaboration with his brother Anders Hegelund) won 4 major first prices and was awarded 6 medals for architectural achievements.

In 1985 The National Foundation of Art chose Lars Hegelund for their 3 year grant providing the basis for further studies of art and design. The new ideas were featured in his book ‘The Things Around Us’, a series of TV productions by the National Danish Television and a number of educational magazines which he produced for the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.

For 7 years Lars Hegelund was a chairman of ‘the Committee for Architecture and Design in Schools’ under ’the National Federation of Danish Architects’ and lectured throughout Europe including at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge in the UK .

Based of his accomplishments Lars Hegelund was granted resident status in the USA as “a person of extraordinary ability” and took up residence in Fort Lauderdale where he now focuses on a high quality art dealership and a spirited approach to non representational painting.

Workshop Director and Coordinator

Lecturer:
Terry Kondralian
Armenian-born Terry Kondralian has been a familiar face by many Miami clients and colleagues in the Oriental rug industry since 1979. His knowledge and professional background, however, began at a much earlier age, having been born into a long-line family history of rugs.
At the early age of 11, he was sent to study in a monastery in Jerusalem. Besides his daily responsibilities of schooling, he was also assigned an apprenticeship for the care and restoration of antique rugs, carpets, tapestries and embroidery.
After completing his studies in Jerusalem, he traveled as an undergraduate student to many countries such as Lebanon, Armenia, Syria, Iran, France, Russia, England and United States. In 1974, he received his Masters of Divinity (Theology) from the University of New York. After living in New York, Boston, Houston, and Cleveland, he settled in Miami and joined forces with Avakiansʹ Orient Express, as General Manger of Federated Department Stores in Burdines at Dadeland Mall.
At present, he is owner and president of Gables Oriental Rugs and Hilliard Rug Cleaners (which has been in existence since 1930) and is a distinguished member of Oriental Rug Retailers of America.
